Rabbi Amy Levin Appointed to Influential Committee of the Conservative Movement

Picture
Torat Yisrael can shep nachas ("brim with pride") over the appointment of our Rabbi to the Committee on Jewish Law and Standards of the Conservative Movement. Rabbi Levin shares the distinction of being one of only 25 rabbis to serve on the committee which responds to questions of Jewish law and halakhic interpretation.
An announcement appears in the current issue of the Jewish Voice and Herald and on their web site. Learn more about the Committee on Jewish Law and Standards here.

Trip to Newport

Jonathan Finkle writes:
"On Sunday, October 23, a large group from Temple Torat Yisrael attended a guided tour of the Touro Synagogue in Newport, RI.  The tour, which was arranged by the Programming Committee, covered the early history of Jewish People in the Americas (including the first settlers in Newport), along with the history of the building itself.  The tour guide also discussed how Roger Williams endorsed religious freedom in Rhode Island,  and the famous letter from George Washington to the Touro congregation.  After the tour concluded, the group spent some time at the new Visitor's Center next door, which had wonderful interactive displays."

TY Hosted Exhibit on Islam in America

Our congregation was proud to serve as the host of an exhibit called "The Genesis of Islam in America." The exhibit, funded by a grant from the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities and curated by author Amir Muhammad, explores the lives and times of Muslims in the United States.

Happy Hanukkah!     חג אורים שמח

Picture
Our Cohen School students celebrated the first candle of Hanukkah with the residents of Atria Harbor Hill Senior Living. Then all Cohen School families gathered at the Middle Rd. house for a Sing-Down and latke dinner! See more photos on the Cohen School site.
