Torat Yisrael Services to be Led by Rabbi Levin and  Rabbi Josh Elkin as our "Shaliach Tzibbur"

Picture
TY President, Susan Smoller announced that for this coming autumn, Rabbi Levin will have a new partner in leading Torat Yisrael High Holiday Services.  Rabbi Joshua Elkin will serve as our "Shaliach Tzibbur."  A Shaliach Tzibbur is not a professional cantor, but is a person with the voice, the skills, the knowledge and the spiritual depth to inspire a congregation through prayer.
Rabbi Elkin expressed deep satisfaction in returning to Rhode Island to serve our congregation.  Those who were raised in Rhode Island may have studied at the Harry Elkin Midrasha, a community Jewish high school program named in memory of Rabbi Elkin's father.  Many Torat Yisrael members have fond memories of Rabbi Elkin's mother, Esther, as a teacher in our TY Cohen Relgious School.

Big News! Our Foundation is Going In!!!   Now!!!

Temple Torat Yisrael finalizes sale of its Cranston facility to Praise
Tabernacle Church

Rabbi Amy Levin of Temple Torat Yisrael on Park Avenue in Cranston and Pastor Allen Pangburn of Praise Tabernacle Church on Magnolia Street in Cranston announced that the synagogue building that has housed the Torat Yisrael congregation for 60 years has been sold to Praise Tabernacle Church.
“The first stage of our Torat Yisrael synagogue building was dedicated in 1952,” Rabbi Levin explained, “and that building has been a gracious, inspiring spiritual and physical home for our congregation ever since.”
The West Bay Jewish community has migrated southward over the decades.  At least 80% of the children currently enrolled in Torat Yisrael pre-k through middle school religious education programs live in East Greenwich and North Kingston.
“Jewish community always thrives when a close-knit community can gather in an accessible location.  We have loved this neighborhood and this neighborhood has been very good to us, but the critical mass of our membership is no longer living in this area of Rhode Island.

We are so proud or our Yeladon class teacher, David Wasser, who here is being notified (at a school-wide assembly in May) that he has received the Jenny Klein Memorial Award as outstanding teacher in a religious school in Rhode Island for this 2011-12 academic year.  David received the awared at the Jewish Alliance of Rhode Island Annual Meeting on June 4th.

“We find profound significance in the fact that the God of Abraham will continue to be served by the membership of the wonderful Praise Tabernacle Church community. Our Torat Yisrael congregation feels as though we are bequeathing a rich spiritual legacy to our building’s newest faith community.”
Praise Tabernacle is a Christian, non-denominational church which was started in 1953 by Pastor Gene Zinni.  It has been in its home on 251 Magnolia Street in Cranston since 1956.  Pastor Allen Pangburn has been the Pastor since 1999.  Pastor Noel Hernandez has been the youth pastor since 2001.  Praise Tabernacle’s goal is to always communicate to people that God is their friend. Be it feeding the homeless daily from our food truck, or going to senior citizens homes and painting their nails.
Pastor Allen Pangburn explained, “Our goal is to show the love of God in action.”
Praise Tabernacle and its outreach organization, the Rhode Island Dream Center have outgrown the present facilities, and are looking forward to utilizing the larger facilities of the Torat Yisrael Park Avenue building.
Pastor Panburn continued, “Praise Tabernacle is always reaching out to the churched and the dechurched. As we move in to the facilities of Temple Torat Yisrael we honor and respect the great heritage of the Jewish Community and nation, and "pray for the peace of Jerusalem."
Temple Torat Yisrael formally removed the status of “Jewish house of worship” from the Park Avenue building in a unique ceremony on April 22nd when the congregation’s sacred Torah scrolls were taken from the building in procession.  The scrolls were driven down to East Greenwich for safekeeping until the congregation’s new synagogue building will be dedicated in the spring of 2013.
Praise Tabernacle Church will embark on interior renovations and anticipate their first services to be held on Park Avenue by early summer.
